Laos – Vientiane Day Trip

We went to Vientiane, which is the capital of Laos.  The produce is arranged in a farmer’s market style, in bundles and stacks, here and there, with an attendant nearby to help.  Outside a small shopping area, there is a street vendor making Loti, a delicious sort of crepe, which might include a banana in the center, and topped with sweetened-condensed milk.  I could probably eat 2 or 3 if you’d let me.

We made our way to a famous tourist sight near the center of the capital.  On the left is Wat Pha That Luang, a national monument that is a symbol of both the Buddhist religion and Lao sovereignty.  To the right is Patuxai which literally means Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph (formerly the Anosavari Monument).  It is a war monument in the centre of Vientiane, Laos, which was built between 1957 and 1968, dedicated to those who fought in the struggle for independence from France.

At the top of Anosavari, there are unubstructive 360 degree views of the city.

Near the center of the capital next to the Mekong River, there is a boardwalk that gets busy with people walking. Walking round, we see another typical sight, a fruit vendor, with an assortment of local fruits.  The Mekong River divides Laos from Thailand for a great length.  Standing near the edge of the river on the boardwalk, you can enjoy a nice view of the sun setting over Thailand in the distance.

After a while of walking along the boardwalk, we stopped to buy some fruit.  After the sunset, we found another street vendor who was selling another snack type of food, BBQ’d squid.  The squid was previously sun-dried.  A quick toasting over the charcoals warms it up and gives is a nice BBQ flavor.
